Measures of  Student Success

Student achievement is the top priority for the Mediapolis Community School District.  Our school uses a variety of methods to measure the success of students.  Assessment results are used not only for evaluating student achievement and growth, but also to assess educational programming and to make decisions pertaining to future instructional plans.

Classroom teachers assess student learning every day in many ways.  Some daily assessments may be formal (tests, projects, etc.) while other daily assessments may be informal (observation, discussion, checklists, etc.)

Throughout the school year we have formal assessments administered at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels.  One of these district-wide assessments is the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (grades 3-8) and the Iowa Tests of Educational Development (grades 9-11).)

ITBS/ITED

Basic Highlights...

4th, 8th, and 11th Grade Proficiency in Reading, Math, and Science

(Students who are in the “Intermediate” or “High” achievement levels on the ITBS/ITED are considered  to be proficient in that curricular area.  Low performance is defined as 1-40%, intermediate 41-89%, and high performance as 90-99%.)

*Testing experts stress that test information is best used to identify areas of strength and weakness for individual students and classes, and to measure growth.  Because of the way tests are designed and demographic factors that influence results, standardized test scores alone are not a reliable method for comparing teachers, schools or districts.  Mediapolis administrators and teachers use test data in planning curriculum, developing school improvement plans, and making instructional decisions.
